The figures released today by not-for-profit Virgin StartUp, as part of its 'Founder Barometer' report, show that fewer business founders are confident their business will be in a stronger financial position in six months' time, decreasing from 66% in November 2023 to 45% today.
The report reveals that business owners are calling on the new government to better support SMEs by scrapping business rates (33%), increasing support for local regions outside of London (32%), cutting corporation tax (26%) and raising the VAT threshold (24%).
Andy Fishburn, Managing Director at Virgin StartUp said, "It's evident that many founders are feeling financial and emotional uncertainty and need support now more than ever.

It's not all doom and gloom. Nearly three-quarters (70%) of business founders responding to the study said they are looking to expand in the next six months, with more than a third (37%) planning to increase their products or services and 22% planning to raise new funds or investment.

A MAJOR bargain chain's town centre store has been saved from closure just days before it was due to shutter its doors for good.
Last month the retail giant, which has 850 branches, announced it would close the Hitchin branch tomorrow (July 16).
At the time Poundland said it had ⁘been unable to secure a long-term lease that would enable us to keep trading⁘.
But the budget retailer has today confirmed that the store will remain open after a deal was reached.
One local commenting on the announcement said: ⁘That's great news for all the staff and the people of Hitchin.⁘
While the Hitchin site has been saved, Poundland and others have been closing other high street sites amid difficult days for retail .
Among the stores closing in the coming weeks is a Poundland branch in Trowbridge, Wiltshire , which will shut its doors on July 20.
The discounter pulled down the shutters on a store in Altrincham, Greater Manchester , just last month, after taking it on from failed chain Wilko last year.
But since then, several have closed down, including in Ellesmere Port , Galashiels , Scotland , and the Sailmakers Shopping Centre in Ipswich.

And in an exclusive interview, Olly was asked at the event who he would like to star alongside in a movie and why.
Revealing that the decision was 'really hard' for him, he said: 'I would love to be in a movie with Kirsten Dunst.
The singer received critical acclaim for his performance as Ritchie Tozer in the Channel 4 drama It's A Sin in 2021
Olly also admitted that if a biopic was ever released, he 'would go with a curve ball casting choice and go with Florence Pugh' to star as him.
