HOLLYOAKS star James Sutton has slammed Channel 4 for “ripping the heart out of the soap” with the cuts. The actor ⁘ who has played John Paul McQueen for 20 years ⁘ also revealed the real reason he finally quit the soap. The Channel 4 soap underwent cuts in 2024, with episodes slashed from five to just three per week and more than 130 job losses behind the scenes.
James told The Mail : “So many of the crew had been there for years, so it really was an awful time. Calling the changes “heartbreaking”, James added that the “energy of the place had never recovered. Taking aim at bosses, he slammed them for not using him enough, revealing that it had made his decision to leave easily.
He said: “The show has changed a lot over the last couple of years, going down to three shorter episodes, and they are telling stories in different ways. “So for someone like me, who has been acting since I was eight years old, and if I'm employed as an actor and I'm not acting, then it was starting to get a little frustrating.” He added: “I haven't sat around being bitter and angry and resentful.
