According to a study by American Express, the campaign's founder and principal supporter, the average spend per person was £63, the highest figure in five years.

The government's endorsement of the event was palpable, as they welcomed the high street to Downing Street for a market-style showcase at the No10 Christmas light switch-on. A survey of 4,000 adults revealed that the motivations behind shopping small were multifaceted.
For 46%, the desire to support local business owners was paramount, while 39% were driven by a personal commitment to frequenting independently owned shops and small businesses. The challenging year faced by small businesses also resonated with 32% of respondents.
