A recent survey by Red Tractor reveals that 94% of UK consumers now trust British-produced food, the highest level since the survey began. The fifth annual Trust in Food Index, polling over 2000 adults, also highlights growing doubts about food imports from countries such as the US and India.

While trust in UK food has surged, confidence in US products has dropped sharply to 33% from 74% last year.

Trust in Indian food has fallen to 31% from 62%.

Nine out of ten respondents want more food to be grown in the UK, citing concerns about foreign standards, particularly animal welfare.

Nearly 60% believe US food production standards do not match UK levels, up from 46% two years ago.

The rise in trust for British food reflects growing confidence in safety, quality and supply chain traceability, with 90%, 88%, and 86% of consumers agreeing on these points respectively, all improved from previous years.

Farmers enjoy high trust, with 88% of shoppers confident in them, followed by food assurance schemes at 79%. These schemes are seen as the main guardians of food safety and quality, ahead of government and individual farmers.

Red Tractor chair Alistair Mackintosh said: "The world leading standards to which British farmers operate sets us apart from our international competitors.
