
Anyone who has ever had an online order delivered from a supermarket will have experienced the 'substitutions' lottery.
Now a survey has confirmed what many already know – that the replacements sent out for unavailable items can be bamboozling.
Shoppers report receiving fish steaks instead of cupcakes and sanitary towels in place of sandwich wraps.
Consumer watchdog Which? found 29 per cent of customers received a substitution in their most recent shop, with some receiving unexpected items over the past year.
One reported receiving bananas instead of pizza, while another found a roasting tin in place of roast potatoes and a third said they had been given 'micellar water' face wash instead of drinking water.
The poll found a third of Sainsbury's customers found a substitution in their latest grocery shop. Among the more bizarre examples were leeks sent in place of flowers.
