Reese Witherspoon Says British Actress Ended Friendship After Being Roasted

The ⁘Big Little Lies⁘ star says she's ⁘still embarrassed⁘ over making ribald jokes at an event she describes as ⁘British, elegant, classy.⁘

"It haunts me, it literally haunts me," the actress shared in a recent interview with PEOPLE about a comedic awards speech that went wrong. "So this friend of mine, who I didn't really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress. She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her."

⁘The tone was British, elegant, classy,⁘ Witherspoon explained, ⁘and I was like, 'Remember the time we got laser hair removal?'⁘

Witherspoon has opened up about her anxiety around public speaking before. She wrote a post for Sheryl Sandberg's blog in 2013 that explained that while "speaking in character on a crowded movie set" was never a problem, "giving a speech" in front of an impartial crowd used to be a prospect that "terrified" her.

But it's a fear she's since conquered, writing that she's become ⁘a firm believer that action can solve so many worries, and just powering through, no matter what, can give you the confidence you need when you feel like you've got nothing to offer.⁘
