"We will," said Danielle Goldberg's publicist when I requested an interview earlier this week, "have to politely decline". Fair enough. The stylist is known to be a silent force in Hollywood, transforming Ayo Edebiri, Greta Lee and Kaia Gerber – and new recruit Saoirse Ronan, who just covered British Vogue 's November issue – into fashion plates. But, as Lee told the journalist Christopher Barnard, "in her dreams she would be invisible". This is a rare, perhaps even old-fashioned approach to celebrity dressing. These days most stylists aspire to be just as visible and famous as their well-known clients.

A former Vogue intern, Goldberg's unique process includes keeping files on all of her girls, containing reference images that might be a work of art, or, in the case of Ayo, the storybook character Stuart Little and archive photographs of Whoopi Goldberg from the '90s . Goldberg might have looked to Alexa Chung for the wax jacket-turned-Hodakova-gown Ronan wore to a screening of her new film The Outrun earlier this month, or Kate Moss on Anna Sui's spring/summer 1996 catwalk for the steel-blue JW Anderson minidress she wore on Jimmy Kimmel's late-night television programme.

Ronan has, of course, always looked good. "Pure, authentic and honest," as her former stylist Elizabeth Saltzman , who dressed her in bow-backed Oscars gowns before pausing their professional relationship to explore creative opportunities outside of styling, said . But she now has an attitude – she looks hot.

There have been mannish Ferragamo shirts and leather Ulla Johnson wrap skirts and Tory Burch "office siren" uniforms, but an aesthetic switch-up has been mostly at the expense of Louis Vuitton's Nicolas Ghesquière , for whom she has been an ambassador since the beginning of 2024. Ronan has since worn an asymmetric bubble dress and a navel-grazing jumpsuit from the maison's Resort 2025 collection, a front-draped LBD, and a custom column gown with trompe-l'œil belts while promoting The Outrun and Blitz on the red carpet. She will probably be nominated for her fifth Academy Award for one of those roles, but what Ronan and Goldberg have achieved is something equally as difficult. The actor best known for starring in coming-of-age films, has perhaps, come of age herself.
