We asked, you answered. When we put out a call for fashion students and recent graduates to enter our competition to find emerging talent destined to drive the future of design, we had no idea of how remarkable the response would be.

The competition, held in partnership with BMW, invited entrants to create a fashion or jewellery design inspired by its forthcoming Neue Klasse range. Just as BMW has consistently pushed industry boundaries to create the Neue Klasse – a range of pioneering electric vehicles that seamlessly integrate technology to create an intuitive, human-centric driver experience – we asked our entrants to push the boundaries of what fashion can mean, focusing on circularity, innovation and luxury.

Our judging panel consisted of fashion features director Julia Hobbs, fashion designer Simone Rocha and BMW's colour and materials design specialist Charlotte Kanters, who were faced with the impossible task: narrowing down the list of talented applicants to just three winners. "I'm looking for a design that captures the philosophy of the Neue Klasse," Kanters explained, "such as the circularity, how we can recycle and also be very luxurious? How we can elevate the product?" Meanwhile, Hobbs sought a "new definition of luxury". The competition was incredibly stiff, with judges marvelling at the creativity of the designers. "I was really surprised by the level of quality," Rocha said.

In the end, 15 worthy entrants made the final shortlist. Eva Clarkson's proposal focuses on reusing damaged and surplus materials from BMW for a line of clothing and jewellery inspired by luxury, presenting an old-becomes-new-again take on contemporary British design. Also inspired by Neue Klasse's use of materials was Alex Witty: his fashion-forward trainer designs are made of recyclable fossil fuel-free leather substitute, recycled polyester and rubber from recycled car tyres.

Maria Medina Medina was drawn to the Neue Klasse range's emphasis on circularity when creating her garments, honouring both the work of pioneering environmental activists and her own Colombian heritage with the use of surplus fabrics and natural dyes such as coffee. Jessica Evans also drew inspiration from the natural world, printing her zero-waste skirt, top and coat with photos of microscopic algae culture taken during her lab work.
