Amber Valletta rose to fame as a model during the '90s, before turning her hand to acting in the Noughties – most memorably, alongside Will Smith in the 2005 rom-com Hitch . It was during this period that she wore the red-carpet look that she cringes over the most: a sheer leopard-print halter-neck top by Dolce ⁘ Gabbana, which she wore with a bra underneath and mid-rise jeans. "Nobody had stylists yet," she recalls on The Closet Digest , British Vogue 's new podcast sponsored by Vinted, which delves deep into the stories behind our clothes. "The whole thing is just so bad."
Still, in many ways, Valletta's style hasn't changed over the years: she's usually found wearing vintage Levi's, and she still owns the Maison Margiela jumper that she bought as an 18-year-old in Paris. "I'm still wearing dresses I had… from the '90s that are vintage now, or vintage [pieces] that are even older now that I bought back then," the model says.
The most cherished item in her wardrobe, though, has to be her great-grandmother's wedding dress – a true family heirloom, which was made by hand. "It's so special and fragile," she describes. "It's completely in its natural state."
When it comes to sustainability , Valletta – who is also British Vogue 's contributing sustainability editor – is keen to emphasise the role that fashion has to play in tackling the climate crisis. "All of our actions collectively will help change the outcome in 50 years," she says. "I think fashion has… the possibility of being one of the greatest change-makers on the planet."
