
Happy Valley star Sarah Lancashire burst into tears as her name was announced as Best Actress at the BAFTA TV Awards for her role as Catherine Cawood in the drama. The 59-year-old welled up as she took to the stage to accept the honour.
She was presented with the award by Hollywood star Jeff Goldblum who received a rapturous welcome from the audience. Rob Rinder was seen saying "amazing" as the Jurrasic Park star walked on stage.
She beat out five other nominees to the gong. They were Anjana Vasan for the Black Mirror episode Demon 79, Sharon Horgan for Best Interests, veteran actress Anne Reid for The Sixth Commandment, Helena Bonham-Carter for her portrayal of Crossroads legend Noelle Gordon in Nolly and Bella Ramsay for her role in The Last Of Us.
She proved a popular choice with the audience as many gave her a standing ovation as she took to the stage. Wearing a dark green velvet gown with a black jacket over it she accepted the award from Jeff and had to take a moment to compose herself.
"Thank you BAFTA," she said through her tears. "I'd like to acknowledge my fellow nominees and their tremendous work," she said graciously.
"Thank you Sally Wainwright [Happy Valley writer] I shall forever be grateful to you for this opportunity," she sobbed.
Aongside Sally she thanked the show's producer and director and the "formidable" cast and crew" who worked on it. "I feel very, very priviledged to have been surrounded by these brilliant actor and I thank each and every one of you."
The star extended her heartfelt gratitude to BBC 's Chief Content Officer, Charlotte Moore, and the organisation at large "for giving this very British drama a very British home".
Her success came after her character's dramatic kitchen standoff with James Norton's character, Tommy Lee Royce, was awarded the P⁘O Cruises Memorable Moment Award, beating out a moment from David Beckham's documentary.
