I know this is a prickly subject. Any time I've been involved in research around wine spend, people basically just lie, adding several pounds on to, often doubling, their actual budget (how do I know? It always comes out in the chat eventually).
In the real world, it's totally different. British shoppers aren't just notoriously thrifty when it comes to buying wine, they often make a sport out of it. Compliment a bottle and if someone says, 'Yeah, £6.99 from Aldi!' the, 'Beat that if you can,' is unspoken but usually evident.
