Why Britain’s appetite for cheap food is leaving shelves bare

T ony Montalbano's family business has grown cucumbers for 60 years but he fears that the next harvest could be his last.

His farm in Harlow, Essex, made a loss last year as the price of the gas needed to heat his greenhouses soared. He faces the prospect of another tough season where the prices offered by supermarkets for his crop do not cover his costs.
