LONDON, UK — Thousands of mourners waited for hours Thursday in a line that stretched for nearly 4 1/2 miles across London for the chance to spend a few minutes filing past Queen Elizabeth II's coffin while she lays in state at Britain's Parliament.
The queue to pay respects to the late queen at Westminster Hall was at least a nine-hour wait, snaking across a bridge and along the south bank of the River Thames beyond Tower Bridge.

Thousands of mourners took their places in a queue snaking around the centre of London on Wednesday, recognising without complaint that they might have to wait for hours to see the late Queen Elizabeth lying in state.
As people began filing past the queen's coffin in Westminster Hall from 5pm (16:00 GMT), many stopped for a moment to bow their head and some wiped away tears.
