When Martin Burkitt received the first email from online retailer LightInTheBox early last November, he barely took any notice of it.

Having browsed the clothing website earlier in the day and leaving a handful of Christmas gifts in his basket, he was not surprised to hear from the company with a simple welcome message.

"I got another one the next morning, asking if I'd had difficulties checking out," Burkitt says. "And then, another, the following morning."

All in all, he says LightInTheBox sent him 16 emails in three days, nudging him to complete his order.

Still, while LightInTheBox "lost their minds" sending a series of voucher codes and reminders, it was not enough to convince him.

"There was nothing they were offering to make up for the £30 delivery fees on around £90 worth of stuff," Burkitt says. It was why he had not placed the order in the first place.

Burkitt is among the many British shoppers who are ditching their digital baskets mid-order, posing a headache for online retailers who are already facing pressure from the resurgent high street .

According to figures from Retail Economics and GFS, last year there was a 9pc increase in so-called "basket abandonment" last year, equal to around £3bn of lost sales.

In total, online retailers missed out on £34.4bn worth of sales in 2023, with shoppers citing high delivery costs, limited shipping options and new returns fees as the reasons why they scrapped their order.

If all goes according to plan, British educational computer maker, Raspberry Pi will shortly list on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in an IPO that is expected to raise around £38 million and value the company at £500 million.

Against that backdrop, Raspberry Pi's commitment to a London IPO offers a welcome counter-narrative. London it seems, can be an attractive place to list after all. The question is, how many founder-led companies will come to the same conclusion?

The answer to that question is complicated. On the plus side, a recent survey by Lloyds Bank's Business Excellence Awards team found that British businesses were broadly positive about the U.K. markets. A snap poll of 500 companies found that 81% would choose the LSE iwere they ever in a position to seek a listing. The attraction was the perceived stability of London, with 45% feeling that international markets presented too many risks.

There is also support for London as a listing destination from beyond the U.K. Laurent Descout, is co-founder and CEO of Neo , a Barcelona-based fintech.

Not everyone agrees. Rafael S. Lajeunesse is CEO of ReachX , a platform that connects growth companies with financial advisers. Shoppers Turn On To Online Spending As Sales Rise For Fifth Month

British retailers have notched up their fastest growing quarter on record as parts of the economy rebounded after the worst of lockdown.

Retail sales value notched up a 17.7% rise the three months to the end of September, as shoppers flocked back to some of their favourite high streets.

The Office for National Statistics data showed that September was the fifth consecutive month of growth for how much British shoppers were spending.

However, more than a quarter (27.5%) of these sales are now online, against only 20.1% in February, the ONS said.

⁘Whilst we might be entering the colder months of the year, this latest set of results suggests the UK retail market is yet to feel the chill,⁘ said Karen Johnson the head of retail and wholesale at Barclays.

Overall growth in sales volumes ⁘ rather the amount spent ⁘ was up 5.5% compared with February⁘s pre-pandemic level, the ONS added.

Food stores⁘ sales were above February levels by 1.7%. Supermarkets are expected to benefit further from new local restrictions hitting pubs and restaurants hardest.

Fuel sales volumes remained low, down 8.6% from February with reduced travelling, and clothing sales volumes remained 12.7% below pre-pandemic levels.

Senior British lawmakers, including the chairs of three parliamentary committees, have questioned fast-fashion giant Shein's suitability for a London stock market listing and called for greater scrutiny of the Chinese-founded firm.

Shein is stepping up preparations for a London listing after its attempt to float in New York faced regulatory hurdles and resistance from US lawmakers.

The firm, known for its US$10 tops and US$5 biker shorts, faced criticism from US lawmakers over alleged labour malpractices, lawsuits from competitors, and use of an import tax exemption.

British Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt held talks with Shein's Executive Chairman Donald Tang in February and the firm is keen to list in London, a UK government source told Reuters.

Britain is keen to attract more listings after losing out on some big-name flotations to other financial centres.

However, Alicia Kearns, the Conservative chair of parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, said Shein should not be permitted to list in London.

Sarah Champion, the Labour chair of the International Development Committee, said serious concerns had been raised about Shein's labour practices.

The New London Cultural District has created a new mobile app, called Explore New London, available in the Apple and Google Play app stores.

The city's news release describes the app as a "one-stop resource to learn about everything from events, restaurants, shops and worship services to auto mechanics, banks, laundromats and medical services."

Users can click on five main categories ― Cultural District, Eat ⁘ Drink, Shop ⁘ More, Events and Community ― and then browse additional sub-categories within them.

For example, under Eat ⁘ Drink, people can click on a host of different types of food sub-categories, such as seafood, bakeries, outdoor dining, pizza and grocery stores, to get a list of those types of businesses, or they can click on "all restaurants" to get a full listing of restaurants.

Coronation Street fans think the person behind Abi Franklin's faked sex tapes will face their downfall very soon.

Abi was horrified this week as it appeared a sex tape from her past that she had no recollection of had been shared online. But she soon realised she'd been set up, and the person she thought was behind it was not to blame.

Not only that but there were multiple videos, and it quickly emerged that they were deepfake videos, manipulated so that Abi's face was placed over the person in the footage. Realising someone was targeting her, Abi set out to find out who was doing it and why.

But viewers believe the culprit could give away their identity soon enough thanks to a tattoo hint. There appeared to be a dragon tattoo on the leg of the woman in at least one of the videos.

While it's unlikely the real culprit would have used a video of themselves, some fans can't help but speculate that the person has done just this. Knowing soap land and the twists that often unfold, some viewers are convinced that the tattoo is the key to finding the culprit, believing they have edited footage of themselves with Abi's face.

M⁘S has permanently pulled down the shutters on its branch in Neath, Wales , in a blow for locals.

The posh retailer confirmed in February the branch was earmarked for closure , but didn't announce what date it would shut.

But a picture recently posted on Facebook shows signs have been put up in the shop's windows saying ⁘we're now closed⁘.

It comes following a string of Marks and Spencer store closures as part of radical restructuring plans announced by bosses.

Branches in Manchester , Swindon, Peterborough and Cheltenham have all closed since August last year.

It's worth noting these figures exclude Greater Manchester Police and Devon and Cornwall Police, both of which experienced issues providing data during this period.

Mr Cleverly went on to claim: "On that time frame it [knife crime] is up 22% in Labour-run London."

So it's possible that Mr Cleverly may have been referring to this previous dataset when he claimed knife crime was down in the rest of England and Wales, excluding London.

Hollyoaks taken off Channel 4 in permanent scheduling shake-up

Hollyoaks will no longer broadcast weekdays on Channel 4 in a schedule change taking effect later this month.

The broadcaster has announced that the soap, which premieres episodes on E4 and its streaming service a day ahead of the main channel, will become the UK's first completely digital-first soap.

Not only that, episodes will be available to stream in full on YouTube a week after their premiere on E4.

It's not a complete removal of Hollyoaks on Channel 4, as the weekly omnibus will still air on a Sunday.

The reason given for this change is that 64% of viewers watch via first-look streaming or on E4, and the plan is to simplify how the audience – which has a younger demographic than the other soaps – consumes it.

Hollyoaks ' new era has officially begun this week, with the long-running soap no longer airing in its traditional 6.30pm slot on Channel 4.

Channel 4 bosses first announced the changes earlier this month, but just in case you've missed it, here's a quick recap of everything you need to know.

Hollyoaks has aired in its familiar 6.30pm slot on Channel 4 for 28 years, but the soap will no longer be broadcast on the main linear channel at this time.

The change has been made because viewing habits have shifted away from the 6.30pm showing in recent years.

As part of Channel 4's ongoing stream-first strategy, daily Hollyoaks episodes have been released early on the broadcaster's free streaming service since March 2022 .

There's also the 7pm first-look slot on E4, which usually outrated the Channel 4 repeat the following day.

In a recent press release, Channel 4 commented: ⁘In 2023, 64% of viewers have watched the soap via streaming or E4, resulting in 556 million minutes of the show being streamed in the first half of the year.⁘

During the scene, Ella revealed she had been visiting for a while and they both commented on how lucky they were to have each other.

Later, Ella confronted Manpreet in the hallway as she accused her of spying on her. Manpreet was left baffled over Ella's accusation and assured her she was there on doctor's business. After Ella gave Manpreet a lift home in silence, she made her co-worker promise not to tell anyone. Ella warned if she spied on her or told anyone she would leave the village immediately.

Viable, a London-based fintech startup that aims to help small businesses with finances, has raised $3 million in seed funding.

Founded in 2023, Viable typically works with e-commerce and direct-to-consumer (DTC) companies in beauty, wellness, and fashion to provide clearer data on their finances.

Cofounder Franklyn Martin said these e-commerce businesses were facing a double threat: rising costs and investors turning away from the space.

"We're working with small, online businesses that are typically founder-led, with small internal finance teams," Martin told Business Insider.

"After the Covid boom, there has been less equity in the space, meaning the blueprint for DTC businesses has moved from being VC-backed; it's about growing with leaner teams and better financial performance at the earlier stage while dealing with rising costs from inflation," he continued.

Viable uses machine learning to tag and match transactions in real time to give businesses a view of their finances and projections of future balances. Users pay a monthly fee ranging from £500 to £1,500 (around $635 to $1,900) depending on the tier they select, which can include access to more to more premium services.

The $3 million in seed funding comes from Episode 1, Haatch, Portfolio Ventures, and a group of angel investors. Funding began in mid-December last year and was finalized by April, Martin said.

Martin said the funding would go toward full-time hires, including a designer, as the company looks to accelerate its product development.

He added that the startup would also use it to develop embedded finance products, allowing users to access credit and lending facilities through the platform.
